2009 CORSA Convention - Jacksonville, Florida

The 2009 CORSA Convention was held in Jacksonville, Fl on July 13-17. The convention was held at the Wyndham Jacksonville River Walk along side the St John's River. Events included the Concours and car display which was setup along the river. Featured this year was the 1969 model as this was the 40th anniversary of the model year.

Intro to the Corvair

The Corvair was a rear-engined automobile produced by General Motors from 1960 to 1969. It was offered in a wide range of body styles (such as a four-door sedan, coupe, convertible, station wagon, pickup, panel van, a window van called the Greenbrier) and featured an air-cooled engine, which was unusual for American cars at the time.

The Corvair remains one of GMs most unusual creations. Design began in 1956 under the auspices of Ed Cole, and the first vehicles rolled off the assembly line in late 1959 as part of the 1960 model year (in which it was named Motor Trend magazine's Car of the Year.

Jay Leno's and his 1961 Corvair Rampside

Jay Leno shows off the restoration of his 1961 Chevrolet Corvair Rampside.

Jay spied his derelict Rampside by Big Dog Garage, abandoned and in terrible condition. Recognizing a unique and now fairly rare diamond in the rusty rough, Jay acquired the vehicle for $600 and set upon a ground up restoration that began with totally dismantling the pick-up down to the screws. Although Jay and his team made a few adjustments, the restoration is primarily stock, thanks to a few extant companies which manufacture all parts for the still popular Corvair.

2008 Fall Affair

Held in Raleigh, NC
October 24-26, 2008.

It was a good but rainy weekend in Raleigh for the 32nd annual Fall Corvair Affair hosted by CORSA/NC.

The weekend started with a cruise in Friday night to the local Sonic. About the time that was winding down it started raining. The nights entertainment was a movie in the hospitality room.

FIre and ICE 2007

The 2007 Fire and ICE autocross was held at the Iowa International Raceway in Marshalltown, IA. This .6 mile track is perfect for racing. Twenty-six drivers from eight states raced their Corvairs.
